What is a Cover Letter?

Steps to a Winning Cover Letter

Your cover letter should be no more than 1 page long.

  1. Refer to the position for which you are applying.

  2. Highlight skills, experience, education, specialized knowledge and activities relevant to the position.

  3. Demonstrate your knowledge of the company (if possible). If you don't have time to research an organization, indicate why you are interested in the position and any contributions you can make that would benefit the organization. Or, if you are familiar with the industry in which the company operates, display your understanding of trends and the current status of the industry.

  4. Thank the employer for their consideration of your application. Make a request for an interview at a mutually convenient time (if applicable).

  5. Critique your cover letter. Check for spelling and grammar. It is also a good idea to have someone else critique your cover letter.

  6. Use the following checklist to help you evaluate your cover letter:

    • There are no typing, spelling or grammatical errors.
    • There are adequate margins and spaces between paragraphs.
    • You respond to the key qualifications listed in the ad.
    • You have addressed the letter to the contact person listed in the ad.
    • There are between 3-4 paragraphs in your letter.
    • The letter is attractively laid out.
    • The letter is original and is tailored to the company and the position for which you are applying.

  7. Once you've finalized your cover letter, laser-print it on good quality paper. Make sure you print it on the same quality, colour, and type of paper you used for your résumé. Don't forget to sign the letter.
